2017 has been an exciting year for Horicon.

There’s been a lot of hard work going on to improve the environment in both Brant Lake and Adirondack. We’ve completed Schroon Lake water quality projects in Adirondack with a grant from the Department of State. Our Lake Steward Decontamination program has been expanded on both Schroon and Brant under a DEC grant that provided a 75% reimbursement of labor costs. The Town budget was increased this year to allow for an expanded effort to reach a maintenance level of Eurasian Milfoil in Brant Lake.

Some other noteworthy projects we’re proud of is the new dam and bridge over the Brant Lake outlet into Mill Pond. New fencing around town that’s getting a lot of positive feedback! This fall, the boat launch on Brant was paved to improve access for residents and visitors.

Another highlight is funding for the North Warren EMS at a sufficient level to provide ALS coverage 24/7 for 2018…something that is very important even for a small community like ours.

Good new for all Adirondackers, State voters have approved a constitutional amendment to create a land bank in the Adirondacks & Catskills that will let local towns and villages greatly reduce the time frame for public projects on State Forest Preserve land. That means projects like the Middleton Bridge over the Schroon River in the Town of Horicon can be completed without amending the State Constitution, a process that takes years. Now, local governments can purchase small pieces of state land for local projects and the State will add that amount of land to the land bank else where.

Enjoy your winter whether you spend it snowmobiling, ice fishing, skating, sledding, skiing or just curling up in front of the fireplace!
